Last month, Sanibel Fire and Rescue District Deputy Chief John DiMaria and Fire Fighter Brandon Pujol came to our VIP offices to teach us how to use these high-tech, state-of-the-art, life-saving devices. VIP Realtors Judie Anderson, Teresa Baker, Bob Berning, Mike Billheimer and Deb Gleason took time away from their busy schedules to get this important training.
Automated External Defibrillators (AED) can save a life by delivering an electric shock to the heart during sudden cardiac arrest. These digital units provide audio and visual instructions that make them easy to use. External defibrillators have been studied for over 100 years, but it wasn’t till 1947 that Dr. Claude Beck of University Hospitals of Cleveland, in a desperate situation, used his experimental defibrillator to successfully revive a 14 year-old patient. Since then, there has been remarkable progress in treating these life-threatening events in pre-hospital settings. The key to AED’s effectiveness is early intervention. Using an AED as soon as possible after someone collapses from sudden cardiac arrest significantly increases their chance of survival . We are proud to have this technology in our office and pray we never have to use it!
