We did it! It was a good learning experience and great fun to participate in the Coastal Watch “Adopt-A-Mangrove” program. It is hard to believe that we adopted our mangrove propagules (aka seeds) over 6 months ago! Our efforts have been rewarded as 5 of the 6 seedlings have blossomed. Our own “Mangrove Mamma” VIP Realtor Mary Morris took the time to take the plants to the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) Bailey Homestead last week. From there, the Coastal Watch program will incorporate them into their next shoreline restoration project. Thank you, SCCF, for encouraging many of us to participate in this important project. Coastal Watch Director Kealy McNeal said it best: “It’s undeniable that the mangroves played a critical role in protecting Sanibel during Hurricane Ian, and, unfortunately, several mangroves throughout the area were lost and need to be restored. The “Adopt-A-Mangrove” Program is just the beginning of the process to restore our shorelines.” VIP Realty Sanibel & Captiva has proudly supported this important initiative!
