Throughout the month of January, the Sanibel Library is hosting an exhibition of artwork ranging from paintings to mixed media collages created by Myra Roberts, a local island resident. Several of Roberts’ art series are featured including her Hidden In The Trees/Blue Project, Dream Peace series, Angels On Earth series, and her Prelude To The 1940s series. Also included are many of her retro-themed paintings featuring life in Southwest Florida in the mid-20th century. These are among her most recognizable pieces. In sharp contrast to that celebration of life are her thought-provoking pieces of the Prelude To The 1940s series that were created more for display in a museum than hanging on a wall. This series touches on the innocence of the 1930s along with the rise of Nazism and pre-war Eastern Europe.
The Sanibel Public Library Exhibit is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Myra Roberts’ unique artwork. Her paintings are featured in collections both private and public across the United States and Europe. Her Faces of Anne Frank project received letters of endorsement from the Jane Goodall Institute and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Additionally, Roberts donates many pieces to be sold at charity auctions all over the country.
Continuing to be recognized for her amazing artwork, WGCU Public Media, in partnership with the Florida Community Foundation and the Women’s Fund of Southwest Florida, Roberts was selected as one of five 2016 Makers: Women Who Make Southwest Florida, a nomination made by the public. The five nominees will be highlighted in a documentary currently under way which is being filmed by another Sanibel local, journalist Chelle Koster Walton.
