Chinese New Year will be celebrated February 1, 2025. This marks the beginning of the Year of the Snake, the sixth sign of the Chinese zodiac. People born in the year of the snake are known for their wisdom, intuition, charm and elegance. Overall, the year of the Snake offers opportunities for growth and embracing the new by making wise decisions and pursuing knowledge.
Why not start this transformative journey by taking a Chinese Calligraphy class at the Community House, 2172 Periwinkle Way? As part of their Arts & Culture Series, this class is being taught on Thursday mornings by Wang Lao-Shi, who will teach you to write your name, poems and more. Teacher Wang and his wife came to the U.S. in 2012 and moved to Fort Myers in 2020 to be closer to their daughter, Yi, who lives on Sanibel. Yi assist with the classes so you will have the pleasure of meeting her as well.
Wang Lao-Shi was a professional engineer in China. He has a passion for Chinese calligraphy and brush painting. He would love to introduce you to this ancient Chinese art form. No experience or knowledge of the Chinese language is needed. I have taken the first class and learned so much already. Making the brush strokes is very calming and can easily become a meditation. In one class, I learned the characters for the numbers 1,2,3 and the words wood, sun, moon, and horse. Teacher Wang even taught us some stretching exercises that will enhance our mobility and extend our lives! The one-hour class flies by! You can register for this weekly class on Eventbrite. There is a small fee that supports the Community House. I hope you will take advantage of this rare opportunity. A program like this is one of the many reasons that makes living on Sanibel so special!
